Grove GMK5150XL Deployed On Restoration Of 200-Year-Old Windmill
The Hermien Windmill is the most recognisable landmark in the village of Harreveld in the Achterhoek region of the Netherlands, where it has stood for over 200 years. Built in 1819 by JJS van Raesfelt, a local doctor, to provide grain for the community, today it is maintained by the Hermien Belt-Driven Grain Mill Preservation Foundation.
The historic windmill was recently renovated and reopened in April 2026. As part of the renovation, the windmill’s 3-tonne sail blades were replaced. Dutch rental company Pfeifer Group deployed its Grove GMK5150XL to lift the blades into place. The all-terrain crane was rigged with 12.5 tonnes (13.8 U.S. tons) of counterweight and 55.9 metres (183.4 feet) of main boom, enabling it to easily position the blades at a radius of 18 m (59 ft).
“On this project, the precision of the Crane Control System on the GMK5150XL gave us full confidence in handling the work on such a delicate, historical monument,” says Gerrit Pfeifer, director and owner at Pfeifer Group. “The crane has excellent reach and strength, and it was straightforward to transport to the jobsite, set up, and then tear down. We are proud to play a role in preserving such an important piece of local history.”
The Perfect Fit For The Project
The 5-axle GMK5150XL has a 68.7-m (225-4-ft) Megaform main boom and can carry up to 10.2 t (11.2 U.S. t) of counterweight with 12-tonne-per-axle limits. Its 2.75-m (9-ft) width allows it to manoeuvre jobsites with ease. It has two slewing gears with axial piston motors, planetary gears, and an automatic brake.
The outriggers have four double hydraulically telescoping beams with vertical cylinders and outrigger pads, independent horizontal and vertical movement control, and an electronic level indicator with automatic levelling.
The tiltable aluminium cab offers full vision, ergonomic controls, an adjustable seat with suspension, and an engine-independent heater.
