New 40-Tonne MDLT 1109 Is Europe’s Largest Potain Tower Crane
As European customers increasingly choose to use heavier prefabricated components to save time during construction, they turn to cranes with greater capacity to handle the outsize loads. Manitowoc answers the call with its new Potain MDLT 1109, the brand’s largest and most advanced tower crane designed for the European market.
The top-slewing MDLT 1109 can hoist loads of up to 40 tonnes (44 U.S. tons), and at its 80-metre (262-foot) maximum reach, it has an 11.1-t (12.2-U.S.-t) capacity. The crane is intended for major infrastructure projects such as nuclear plants, bridges, and more.
“The MDLT 1109 is a game-changer for European infrastructure projects,” says Thibaut Le Besnerais, vice president of marketing and development for tower cranes at Manitowoc. “It combines unprecedented power with surprising ease of transport and setup—a combination that will accelerate project timelines and redefine what’s possible in large-scale construction.”
Improving On The Potain MD 1100
The new MDLT 1109 is a newer version of Potain’s popular MD 1100 crane with a more compact footprint, easier transportation, and more efficient assembly. The MDLT 1109 gets much of its strength and reliability from the MD 1100 while incorporating enhancements based on Manitowoc’s customer feedback programme.
One significant improvement is the use of the 2.45-m (8-ft) K850 mast family, which has a smaller footprint than the 4-m (13.1-ft) mast on the MD 1100 and can be transported in fewer trucks. The 2.45-m footprint is available on fixing angles or on an 8-m (26.2-ft) chassis.
Modular For Fast Setup
The modular nature of its K-mast design also makes the new Potain MDLT 1109 quicker to set up. With its light weight and flexible configuration, the crane can be raised in complex environments such as dams and viaducts and shipyards, according to Manitowoc.
Whereas the Potain 1100 had a mast head, the MDLT 1109 is a low-top crane with a protrusion of less than 6 m (19.7 ft) above its jib. This allows it to work next to other tower cranes on a work site without an excessive need for clearance. The crane is available with 150 HPLTM 100 or 270 LVF GH Optima lifting hoists. It can be used with P+ load curves for greater lifting capacities.
Potain Technologies
The MDLT 1109 comes with Potain’s newest technologies, including the Potain Crane Control System (CCS) with a user-friendly interface and jog-dial navigation. The system shares ergonomic controls and parts with Manitowoc, Grove, and Potain cranes to simplify service requirements and operator training.
The MDLT 1109 supports Potain Connect telematics, which affords technicians, service managers, fleet managers, and jobsite managers remote access to the crane’s data. Potain Connect’s fleet management abilities and timely maintenance can improve efficiency and avert potential problems. The tower crane has a Potain Cab-IN internal mast lift to give the operator a safe and convenient ride to its cabin.
